CASOS Ph.D. students Will Frankenstein and Kenneth Joseph were awarded $1000 in research funding from CMU Crosswalk Program, Graduate Student Small Project Help (GuSH) for their work titled "Social Media ACTion: Nukes, the Arab Spring, and Affect Control Theory."

Welcome to new CASOS Ph.D. student Matthew Benigni. Matthew comes to the program from the United States Military Academy and he is interested in scalable methodologies that link large disparate data sets to inform decision making.

CASOS Ph.D. student Kenny Joseph presents his research, "Group-based Constructuralism", at the Annual American Sociological Association student meeting in Washington, D.C.

CASOS Ph.D. student Will Frankenstein presents "Remote WMD Capabilities Assessment" data and research on July 30th at the Annual DTRA Basic Research Technically Review. This research is also co-authored by student Ghita Mezzour, faculty Rick L. Carley and Kathleen M. Carley.

CASOS PhD students Kenny Joseph and Wei Wei were both selected to each receive $500 in Graduate Student Assembly/Provost Conference Funds from Carnegie Mellon University. The goal of this funding is to enable more Carnegie Mellon graduate students to either attend or make presentations at key conferences in their fields. Kenny and Wei will present their research at the ACM SIGKDD conference in August.

Prof. Jurgen Pfeffer is giving an invited talk at Euroscience Open Forum (ESOF), Europe's largest science meeting. He will give a talk on "Visual analytics in mapping of social-semantic networks."

On May 7 Prof. Jurgen Pfeffer travelled to Vienna, Austria to give a One Day workshop on creating and handling network data related to studying social networks.

From May 27-31, CASOS Ph.D. student Wei Wei will travel and present the paper "Real Time Closeness Betweeness Centrality Calculations on Streaming Network Data" co-authored with Prof. Kathleen M. CMU-CASOS indonesia team - Kathleen M. Carley, Jurgen Pfeffer, Peter Landwehr, Wei Wei, Momin Malik present findings on use of twitter to support disaster response in Indonesia at University Pittsburgh Sees conference.

CASOS Ph.D. student Kenny Joseph and Prof. Kathleen Carley publish paper, "Two 1%s don't make a whole: Comparing simultaneous samples from Twitter's Streaming API" at 2014 International Social Computing, Behavioral Modeling and Prediction Conference (SBP '14).

Assistant Research Prof. Jurgen Pfeffer gives seminar talk to CMU School of Electrical and Computer Engineering. Talk is titled, "Why 'Social' is quite important for Social Network Analysis".

Prof. Kathleen Carley along with other ISR professors Jim Herbsleb, Marcelo Cataldo, and Patrick Wagstrom were given the Allen Newell Award for Research Excellence. The award criteria derive from Allen's precepts of good science: "Good science responds to real phenomena or real problems. Good science is in the details. Good science makes a difference." This award has a citation: "For the creation of empirical methods to rigorously establish the impact of human communication on software quality."

Kathleen Carley gives talk at Università della Svizzera italiana (USI) in Lugano, Switzerland. The talk was titled, "The Power of Meta-Networks for Rapid Ethnographic Assessment".
